I am a Landscape Artist painting realistic pictures in oils on linen.
I’m self-taught and constantly observing the world around me. I love to look at the great master artists and also the best contemporary artists of today. Ultimately though the best teacher is nature and I do my best to emulate that. My paintings have found homes here in New Zealand, the UK, USA, Australia and China.
My start into painting
I sketched and drew ‘a lot’ as a child but it was not until 2003 that I completed my first painting, using paints my wife purchased while in London. Today I still practice a policy that probably relates to my accounting background: Use the best available paints, the best substrate (linen canvas) and the best quality stretcher frames to ensure that the work will last. The quality of my painting surfaces will most certainly outlast me; I hope that the praise for my work will as well!
Process
The process of painting takes time with many thin layers of oil paint being used to slowly build up the effects. As a part-timer, many weeks go by before I\’m finished. Energy is focused on conveying the feeling of light and to create the impression that the viewer could be standing in the scene.
“I like to create depth in a picture so that you can look into it, not just at it with increased detail becoming clear as you move closer to the work and as the light intensity changes.”
I’m married with two children and live in Palmerston North.
