I paint on linen and use mainly Art Spectrum paints with liquin as the medium. The process begins with a layer of gesso and then a quick pencil sketch. The paint is then brought into the equation with paint mixed on a glass palette with a palette knife. The sky is painted in first then the horizon, moving forward into the middle ground and finally the foreground.
Ideally, I like to get the canvas completely covered in the first sitting. This doesn’t always happen due to the complexity of the picture and the size of the canvas. A first sitting can take anything from 3 and 1/2 hours to 8 hours to complete. I use a mixture of techniques with soft blending, wet on wet and layered glazes to create luminosity and depth in the picture.
As a self-taught artist I’m constantly experimenting and trying new things, most paintings include some small change of application or new idea.
